Snow White & the Seven Dwarves

The old saying, “time flies when you’re having fun” must have been talking about fostering puppies. It’s hard to believe that all that time has passed and we have had some fun!

On February 24th, DunRoamin’ Stray and Rescue” had a call from a family. They had found 7 puppies in a cardboard box outside their house that Sunday morning. The box was noticed the evening before but it was late and no one thought anything of it. They certainly didn’t expect to find what they found the next day when they noticed an adult dog hanging around and went to investigate. That’s when they found the puppies. The box had been ripped open – probably by Mama – she stayed with them, keeping them warm and feeding them that previous cold night.

The kind people brought the abandoned dog and puppies into their home and called DunRoamin’. Volunteers with DunRoamin’ went and brought Mama and her puppies to the Florenceville Veterinary Clinic where they were examined, found healthy (although Mama was thin from not getting proper nourishment while pregnant and nursing), named and sent to their new foster home.

So begins the saga of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves”.

Things were easy in the beginning. Anyone who has experience with puppies around 2 weeks old know that Mama dog keeps a pretty clean house at first. Unless she decides that she has a couple of doting foster parents willing to clean up after them for her………….

Time passed, puppies grew and Snow filled out. Her ribs and spine were no longer the first things you noticed when you saw her. Now you saw this beautiful, calm, gentle dog. She had a grateful look on her face that said “thank you” regardless of her bad start at motherhood.

A Tub O’ Pups!

The puppies strived. Grumpy lived up to his name with his grumpy looking face; Doc, was the smallest for most of the time and very curious; Happy was the most laid back. He liked to be held and moaned and groaned and stretched the day away; Dopey, who we renamed Little D (Devil Dog or Dingo) was the feistiest; Sleepy, the only all black one was cuddly; Bashful, who I called Sebastian was a bruiser. He was the biggest and clumsiest of them all; Sneezy, the only female, we renamed River Song. She is ours. I’d like to say she was the cutest but I’d be lying – ours or not, they were all cute!

One by one this week our babies left for their new homes. Today, Little D moved to live a life with another family. There is only River left – and Mama.

Snow is still waiting for that perfect place to enjoy her retirement. She deserves that place because she was a perfect Mama. Her babies all grew into beautiful little puppies in spite of their rough start to life. They were tossed out like garbage but defied all odds and thrived.

So, to the people who abandoned her – you didn’t deserve such a gift. To the people that rescued and adopted them – thank you. You have a treasure that was our pleasure to foster.
