“back to the future”

The old man in the hat

mark glassLoyal readers of my rants will notice that I frequently reference George Orwell’s book, 1984. When science fiction becomes reality, it bears noting. This quote, “He who controls the past controls the future. He who controls the present controls the past.”, would seem to reflect the ambitions of the RULING PARTY OF CANADA.

I would refer readers to the Conservative Party of Canada’s website, subheading, Where We Stand, Canada’s Founding Party. Canada’s founding party!

Even generous critics would be left breathless at this assertion. Now I will acknowledge that John A. MacDonald was the leader of the Conservative Party at the time of confederation, however, it bears no resemblance to the “modern” (pardon the oxymoron) Conservative Party of Harper.

The “original” Conservative Party was augmented by a large number of Liberal members who switched sides to support Confederation. According to Wikipedia, the Conservative Party became the “Liberal-Conservative Party” until the early part of the twentieth century. There it is- the TRUE NORTH, STRONG and Free. Bet you won’t find that tidbit on the PARTY website! Those horrid Liberals, how dare they contribute to the “founding” story.

But, lets get back to the quote. The PM’s attempt to control the Mike Duffy Senate Scandal seems to be droning on. If you recall, Stevie was out in front emphasizing the three monkey rule, he saw nothing, heard nothing and certainly did not tell anyone to do anything. The Prime Minister that is famous about control (have you ever seen one strand of hair out of place, ever!), apparently was “out of the loop”. Talk about controlling the present! However, things are looking grim. Defying all protestations to the contrary, the circle of those in the “loop” is an ever widening, with wave rings lapping Harper’s feet.

Perhaps the PM’s new found love of history could be put to a useful purpose. He could emulate the real founding member of the Conservative Party. My understanding is that John A. liked to tip one back, on occasion. Time for a cold one Stevie, and let the hair down a little. Maybe the sauce will loosen your to
