The SPCA Pond Hockey Fundraising Event was a great success, generating much needed money to support the cause of our homeless pets….and rewarding 3 lucky winners with great prizes!

There were two raffle draws for a cool $100 based on numbers drawn on squares picked that were super-imposed over a photo of Roulston Lake in full tilt hockey mode.
The Perth-Andover Scotiabank generously let the SPCA set up a table in the lobby to sell tickets for Hockey Draw A the week before the tournament.

The $100 for this raffle was won by Eric Kinney of Tilley…Congratulations Eric! And thanks for helping support the Victoria County SPCA.
Tickets for Hockey Draw B were sold at the Visitors Centre at Roulston Lake. This draw was won by Ann Bunker of Plaster Rock…Congratulations Ann!

The third nifty prize to be won by raffle draw was a beautiful hand turned maple bowl made and donated by Tobique Burl Turner Albert Beaulieu of Plaster Rock.. This bowl held two pints of premium maple syrup that was donated to the cause by Peter and Wendy Skinner of Birch Ridge.

Beverly Hoyt of Hoyt’s Flowers and Gifts in Perth-Andover contributed a beautiful gift wrap for the bowl and syrup set to display it to its most beautiful advantage… and this wonderful prize was won by Rochelle Pelletier of Perth-Andover…. congratulations Ro!

I stopped in at the Arthurette Animal Shelter a few days ago and met some of the beautiful cats currently housed at the shelter waiting to find their fur-ever home.
Linda Hiscock was doing volunteer duty, hanging out with the cats and doling out treats.

So many cats need good homes… I met Molina first, a super friendly and athletic yellow tiger. Fred and Barny are both grey tabbies who were dropped off together last year in someone’s yard. They were non-neutered young males, but have now been neutered and have all their shots and are ready to go to good homes. I went on to be introduced to the whole gang of kitties…all of them friendly and looking for a home to call their own!

The shelter is on winter hours and is open Saturdays 11-3 and Sundays 11-2 or by appointment. Call 506-356-1117 and leave a message if no one answers.

It being winter brings up an important issue: Anti-freeze is deadly to animals. Cats and dogs both are attracted to the stuff, it smells and tastes good to them but a lethal dose for a 10 pound cat is just 1 1/2 teaspoons of undiluted anti-freeze, and 4 1/2 ounces will kill a 20 pound dog.

If you see anti-freeze spilled on the ground anywhere please take a moment and mop it up and dispose of it where animals cannot get to it!

While I was chatting with Linda she told me a funny story. She was putting out dog food in the animal feeders in her back yard to feed local critters. It was a brand that contained coloured kibble bits mixed in with the brown kibble morsels.

When she’d check her feeders in the morning, all of the brown kibbles would be gone, but the brightly coloured kibbles would be piled and pushed off to the side.

What or who was playing with the kibble? The pixies? And why just pick out the coloured bits? The mystery was solved when Linda chanced to look outside one day as a group of blue jays were feeding. They were happily gobbling up the brown kibbles, but every time they came across one of those coloured pieces they would pick it up in their bills and toss it to the side. Food critics, eh?

The shelter can still use volunteers and donations….even a little of your time will help! Your generous donations will help stop the cycle of unwanted kittens and puppies as all pets that come through the shelter are spayed or neutered before they go to their new homes.

If you see or know of any cases of animal abuse, and this includes leaving pets outside in freezing weather, please call the SPCA Abuse Hotline at 1-877-722-1522.
