Local Author Publishes New Novel

Martin Beaulieu
Martin Beaulieu
Martin Beaulieu of Perth-Andover has just published the third novel in his historical science-fiction themed trilogy of books.

I met with Martin the other day to find out more about his work.
As it turns out, I’d heard of him originally some 30 years ago when my mom sent me a newspaper clipping from the Victoria County Record, way back in 1981, about the production of a play called “The Capture of Johnnie Burns.”

Martin had starred in this play with my sister Stacey, hence the reason for Mom sending me the clipping. I even still had this picture in my scrapbook! The article about the play and photos of the cast are still on display at the Perth Library. Take a look next time you’re in the library…it’s a neat trip down memory lane!

Originally from Edmundston, Martin came to Perth with his family when he was five years old. His father worked on the construction of Hotel Dieu as it was being built, and then stayed on as maintenance supervisor.

Like many local lads, Martin worked in in a lumber camp during his youth.. He graduated from SVHS in 1968 and moved to Toronto to study broadcasting. After a variety of adventures in both Canada and the USA, he returned to NB in 2005.

He credits his 5th grade teacher, Pearl McNair, for helping to develop his love of books. She read to her classes from a novel each day.

As you can see from the following brief descriptions of Martin’s novels, many things trigger the author’s visions, plots, storylines and ideas.

The Bad Things – Published by Bedside Books, 2004

  • Historical Sci-Fi set in 1811 Missouri.
  • A story about slavery, voodoo, and tolerance.

  • Story developed from a conversation with former school supervisor, Harry Palmer.

The Mindbenders – Published by Infinity Publishing, 2010

  • Historical Sci-Fi set in 1871 Colorado
  • A multi-layered story about choices. The main character, son of an Apache and an Alien from the far side of space, must choose:
  • Shall he keep to harsh Catholicism of his Monastic mentors; follow the gentler but vague religion whose only demand is to respect earth and sky; adopt the technological God of his alien parent; or will he become his own God, with the power of life and death over every human being on Earth.
  • The story is also one of American Imperialism, and the mistreatment of Native tribes in Western America.
  • The story was inspired by a dream fragment.

The Lost Tribe – Published by Infinity Publishing, 2012

  • Sci-Fi set in the near future, San Francisco, 2032
  • A direct sequel to The Mindbenders with a link to The Bad Things.
  • A story about loyalty, love and redemption.
  • 3rd book in the Meddel Trilogy.
