Two brothers from Tobique First Nation have just been honoured with a nomination for Best Aboriginal Music from East Coast Music Awards.
Morgan Nicholas, who is nearly 18, and Kameron Nicholas, who is just about to turn 17, began writing music and performing freestyle rapping together about 4 years ago.

Both said that they love to play and perform to an audience now…. the energy is terrific!
Morgan says that this gave them focus and a tremendous creative outlet in their lives, and they hope to be able to inspire other teens to pursue their own creative muses.

“We had a rough childhood, Morgan said, “And rap has given us the means to overcome the disadvantages of our environment. We’d like to be able to help other kids do the same thing”

They have already inspired another Tobique youth, Preston Sockabasin, to begin writing and rapping.
Morgan and Kameron have a band now, called the “Broken Reckords.” Other members in the group, with their rap stage names, are Tegan “Tegdro” Perley and Jacob “Wize” Sappier.

They write all of their own music, and began recording their work and uploading it to youtube.

Last October, the band played at Fusion Bar in Fredericton and was enthusiastically applauded by the crowd.
Morgan and Kameron had submitted some of their music to be considered by East Coast Music and got the thrill of a lifetime a few weeks ago when they got the call informing them that they were nominees for Best Aboriginal Music of the Year.
“My heart started pounding out of my chest” said Morgan.

The brothers say that no matter what the outcome of this nomination, they will continue to write and rap. They both told me that “This is always an awesome hobby!”

Morgan will graduate from SVHS this year and plans to go on to university at UNB this fall.
Kameron has one more year of high school ahead of him.

They plan to have CDs printed, which they will have for sale at the high school.
If you’d like to check them out online go to youtube and search for Broken Reckords Speechless and Old Self. (You need to add their stage names to help youtube find them)

Keep your fingers crossed for these local lads to win this award!
