Western Valley Centre for Coaching Awards Banquet
The 17th Annual Western Valley Centre for Coaching Awards Banquet was held at the Florenceville Curling Club on May 22nd. The room filled up as people gathered to honour this year’s award recipients and enjoy a lovely sit down dinner prepared by volunteers.
The meal was delicious, and I want to give a special mention to the bartender: As the social began, attendees began asking him for products not in stock, so he promptly put out a n emergency call and had the requested items quickly delivered. It was an attentive courtesy for the guests!
There were lots of fun door prizes too. So many, in fact, that about half the people present won a little something or other!
The event was introduced by guest speaker Manon Ouellette, who has been the Executive Director of Coach NB since June of 2006. Prior to this, Manon was the Executive Director of Skate Canada New Brunswick, and she has been involved in sport of figure skating as an athlete, coach and volunteer.
She is currently part of the coaching staff at the Capital City Skating Club in Fredericton. She presently sits on the Board of Directors of the Coaching Association of Canada as a Provincial and Territorial Coaching Representative.
The Tom Hanson Coach of the Year Memorial Award for 2014 went to Reta Kelley of Perth-Andover. Reta has selflessly donated her time to both organize and coach a number of sports for the Village of Perth-Andover for the past 11 years.
The Official Award 2014 went to Joe McGuire of Woodstock. Joe has officiated for over 50 years in the sport of soccer and basketball in the Western Valley Region. Joe is considered a player’s referee as he is always engaged with the players. Joe has a great sense of humour and loves to tell stories, which he has plenty of after all his years officiating!
The Investors Group Volunteer Sport Administrator went to Evelyn Kitchen of Woodstock this year. Evelyn has donated her time to the Special Olympics in the Western Valley Region in many capacities. She has dedicated many years and countless hours to Special Olympics by acting as president a well as volunteering for various events.
An award for Posthumous Recognition was just begun this year. This award for 2014 went to Darrell Wilson to honour his over 3 decades of officiating hockey for the Town of Nackawic. Darrell was known as a player’s referee, and his strong point was his ability to communicate with others throughout the course of the game.
Darrell sadly passed away last year. His wife Sharon Wilson and his sister Pat Thorne accepted the award and thanked all for the honour on Darrell’s behalf.
The Western Valley Centre for Coaching Education focuses on two major goals throughout the year. The number one goal is: All children deserve a trained coach.
With volunteers, it’s important to provide training and coaching courses to fit into their already busy schedules.
Goal number 2is: Recognition of the Volunteers.
Volunteers are important, valuable and vital to each and every one of our community events and sports programs.
