A Pet Story: Olive the Other Reindeer
Last year, or maybe even in 2012, we’d published a photo of “Olive the Other Reindeer” on our pet page, a DunRoamin’ rescue who was looking for her forever home.
A few days ago, I ran into Marilyn Lewis and we got to talking pets and she told me about this cat she’d adopted from DunRoamin’ named Olive….
“You mean you adopted Olive the Other Reindeer?” I was delighted for them both, and I promptly asked if I could come take some photos of Olive and do a little story about her life in her new digs.
Olive was born sometime around March of 2009. In December of 2010 she was brought to DunRoamin’ in pretty bad shape.
She had a fractured pelvis, and because of this had been unable to pass stool so her bowels were full of rock hard feces. She was a very sick girl. Dr. Monteith decided she needed a Christmas Miracle to save Olive… and she got one!
Olive was soon eating and able to go potty, but she needed to take a laxative twice a day to make sure her bowels kept moving properly. This made her a special needs cat, which made many people reluctant to adopt her and so she stayed at DunRoamin’ for three more long years waiting for her own human.
During July of last year Marilyn decided she wanted to adopt an older cat, and she visited DunRoamin’ to meet the critters. She hadn’t planned on taking anyone home that day, this was just going to be a meet and greet occasion, but Olive had other plans!
As soon as she saw Marilyn, Olive made a beeline for her and would not leave her side! Marilyn had already filled out an adoption application… so, Olive went home with her right then.
Olive is a hoot… she is perfectly aware that she is one lucky cat, too. She’s personable, friendly, playful and is clearly the Queen of the Roost!
She takes her medication twice a day with no fuss, but does get a little treat afterward. At 10 pm she and Marilyn play a rousing game of fetch with a little ball that Olive dexterously catches in mid- air. This is to unwind and get her yah yahs out before bedtime, of course.
Marilyn threw Olive a Birthday Bash on St Patricks Day to celebrate her 5th birthday.
She says she found the perfect cat…or rather, the perfect cat found her!
Her medical issues kept her from being adopted for a long time, but she finally found a forever home where she will be forever loved!
