Shelter Cats Like Christmas Gifts Too!
Of course, the best gift of all that anyone can give a shelter cat is a new forever home!
And there are three beautiful cats at the Victoria County SPCA Shelter that we are featuring this week that would love to be adopted!. Emily was dropped off with two kittens, Gidget and Sooty, earlier this fall. They were packed in a box and left for someone else to deal with….but at least they were left where they could be rescued, and not dropped off to fend for themselves.
Emily is young, probably around a year old. She is a lovely pewter grey, with a white spot on her chest. She’s been spayed, and has all her needles, so she’s ready to go home with you if you’re ready for some more love in your household!
Gidget and Sooty are siblings with delightful but contrasting personalities. Sooty, the boy, is bold and friendly, and is much larger than dainty little all black Gidget. She is a sweetheart and still a little shy. These two aren’t quite ready to go yet, they still need to be spayed and neutered but you can meet these 3 month old kittens during visiting hours at the Arthurette SPCA. The winter hours are Saturdays 11-3 and Sundays 11-2, or by appointment through the week. Please call 356-1117 and leave a message if no one answers. Someone will get back to you ASAP.
Remember, too, that the shelter has reduced the adoption fee for cats to just $75 till the end of the year….and your new pet will be spayed or neutered and have all of his or her needles up to date.
But, if you can’t take a cat home with you right now there are plenty of other gifts that our shelter animals would love to receive this Christmas Season…Can you volunteer at the shelter? Or make a donation to help spay or neuter a shelter cat and cover other vet bills? There are currently 16 cats at the shelter who need to be spayed or neutered… or bring food and treats, cleaning supplies, scoop-able litter. All would be most welcome!
Shelter cats like Christmas Dinner, too…. Shelter volunteers Sharon and Rod are cooking up a whole turkey just for the cats for a special Christmas treat this year.
The kitties will be served their turkey dinner on the 25th around 2 pm-4 pm. Stop by if you’re in the area to meet the gang and hand out any little toys or treats for the kitties you might have!
If it’s too cold for you outside, it’s also too cold for our pets. Feral cats are especially vulnerable during the winter, but cozy and economical insulated shelters can be easily made for them from plastic and Styrofoam totes. If you go to the Victoria County SPCA Facebook page you will find a link to instructions for making cat shelters.
If you see an animal being neglected, abused or left out in the cold….get involved! Call the SPCA Abuse Hotline at 1-877-722-1522 to report the case. It’s up to us to help our pets live decent and humane lives.
The Fur Tree Fundraiser has been a great success, with people all over the River Valley buying raffle tickets in support of the SPCA. We’ll have the story of the draw and who the lucky winner is in the next issue of the Blackfly.
