Maliseet Gas Bar
As you pass through Tobique First Nation on Route 105 you’ll pass by the Maliseet Gas Bar.
Like nearly allof our small rural stores, the Maliseet Gas Bar is a multi-service kind of business!
In addition to typical convenience store stock, the business carries a selection of nifty gift items such as t-shirts and handbags.
A selection of beautiful hand carved walking sticks are on display. Local wood crafter and artisan Howard Johnson makes these wonderful walking sticks. Each one is unique.
Howard selects saplings that have unusual burls and knots and incorporates them into the deign of the walking stick, finishing them off with leather wrapped hand holds.
These make thoughtful, useful and one-of-a-kind gifts for anyone who hikes and are only $40 apiece.
The store once housed a grocery market, but was remodelled into a Kwik Way Convenience Store in 2003. Brenda Castro, a long time local resident, has worked at the Gas Bar since it first opened and is usually the friendly face we see when we deliver the Blackfly Gazette to the store!
The business is owned by Tobique First Nation and is currently managed by Kevin Bear, who took over last February, with Keith Shirley and Tracey Hamilton acting as assistant managers.
The store and gas station employs about 20 people, both full and part time.
Every morning the staff make tasty home-made breakfast sandwiches with real eggs, bacon, sausage and cheese. I was told that you have to get there early to grab one of these sandwiches…they are made at 7 am and are usually sold out within an hour or two!
Different kinds of home-made subs are available as well. Some are made in the store, and they also carry a selection of Ron’s Subs from Plaster Rock.
You can also stop in for a hard ice cream treat. You can choose from 10 different flavours, as either a cone or served in a dish and you will receive a generous portion!
Fresh coffee in 3 flavours is available and is served free to customers on Fridays.
The convenience store is quite busy first thing in the morning and at lunch hour as local workers stop in to grab a quick meal. Like any good general store, folks hang out to chat and visit with each other before carrying on with their day.
A couple of evenings a week you can pick up a home-made pizza. I hear that these are absolutely delicious! Call to find out when these are available.
Stop in here to buy your TFN Fire Department 50/50 tickets. This lottery is open to anyone who wants to participate. The winner is drawn on Tuesday evenings at 6 pm, and the kitty is currently up over $1,000!
The gas bar sells all 3 grades of gas as well as diesel fuel, and the price is usually 4 or 5 cents less per litre than at other outlets.
Stop in to say hello the next time you are headed that way!
