Local Teen to Represent New Brunswick in Miss Teen Canada World Pageant!
Dayna McLaughlin, Miss Teen Perth-Andover 2013, is one of two New Brunswick girls chosen to represent our province in the Miss Teen Canada-World Pageant on July 20, 2013.
This is the biggest pageant in Canada and it is wonderful that a local small town lass has been chosen to compete in this pageant.
Over 60 finalists compete for the Title of Miss Teen Canada-World in July in Toronto each year. Each delegate has been carefully selected through a MTC-W provincial pageant competition that awarded them a regional title to rein for one year from the time of their crowning.
Being awarded the title of Miss Teen Canada-World is an incredible honour— and one that comes with a stunning array of opportunities and an equal amount of responsibility. Miss Teen Canada-World will have the opportunity to make high profile public appearances, be interviewed by local, provincial and national media, attend gala fundraising events and use her influence to inspire others and give generously to wonderful charitable organizations such as Free the Children. The national title winner not only represents her region but all of Canada for one year—until she crowns her successor.
Dayna is 18 years old and will be attending pre-veterinary school this fall in PEI.
She has raised over $1,200 for the Free the Children Charity…an
organization that was founded by Canadian youth Craig Kielburger in 1995 when he gathered 11 school friends to begin fighting child labour. He was just 12.
Craig read a story about a boy from South Asia named Iqbal who had been sold into slavery at
age four. He spent 6 years chained to a carpet weaving loom.
Oriental rug makers like to use small child slaves to weave the valuable carpets because their tiny fingers are more nimble at tying the fibres than those of adults.
Imagine…your four year is just starting pre-school while millions of kids the same age are sold into sexual or industrial slavery around the world.
Iqbal captured the world’s attention by speaking out for children’s rights. Unfortunately, this media coverage also caught the attention of the slavers who murdered Iqbal at age 12 to silence his voice.
Craig gathered together a small group of his fellow grade 7 schoolmates in Ontario and Free the Children was born.
Today Free the Children is an international charity and educational partner with more than 1.7 million youth involved in education and development programs in 45 countries.
