The best thing about doing these little local business profiles we like to feature in the gazette is the opportunity it gives us to hang out and chat with local entrepreneurs.
Even if we’ve been to some store or business a hundred times before, that doesn’t mean we actually know anything about the people who run it.

Everyone has a story, as they say, and all are worth hearing. Getting to know our neighbours is the best way to embrace our common humanity and our communities!
While rounding up some info on upcoming community events I recently had the opportunity to meet Alexis Fenner. She is the Mayor of Plaster Rock who also, along with her business partner Harry, owns and operates the lovely little Ty Gwyn Bed & Breakfast.

I first spoke to Alexis when I called her to get the details of the Christmas Dinner that will be held at the Plaster Rock Lions Club on December 9th. (see The Back Page)

I assumed I’d be speaking to someone who’d be giving me the simple facts and figures of the event but soon found myself utterly absorbed in and fascinated by our conversation.
Alexis is a passionate and committed warrior for a fair and just society for all, especially for her adopted community of Plaster Rock, and this mission was soon made clear as we talked.

I met Alexis and Harry at Ty Gwyn the next week. These two have been business partners for awhile, having previously owned and operated a series of private luxury charter yachts together. She is a fully qualified Captain of Charter Yachts and so she and Harry were the captain, crew, chef and deckhand of three different luxury yachts ranging up to 67 feet in length.

How in the world did these two land in Plaster Rock was my burning question!
They decided to retire from the sea inland someplace, and liked the looks of New Brunswick. They pulled out a map and stuck it with a pin…. And landed on Juniper.

They visited Juniper but did not find property that called to them and so they made their way to Plaster Rock two years ago last August where they purchased the property that would become their home and business.
Alexis was born and raised in Wales … Ty Gwyn is Welsh for “White House” and is pronounced tee-gwen.
Like someone out of a historical romance, Alexis left home at an early age to go to sea. She holds degrees in navigation, literature, mathematics and international transportation management. She is also a fully licensed carpenter and diesel engineer who crochets as one of her hobbies.
And to top this all off she is also a qualified chef with certificates in French and East Indian Cuisine!
I didn’t get a chance to interview Harry, but I am sure that as a former French Foreign Legionnaire he has an equally fascinating story to tell!

If you are a guest at Ty Gwyn you can host a fabulous dinner party for up to 15 diners.
You may order a custom menu or enjoy an enormous steak, roast leg or rack of lamb, prime rib or roast pork dinner.
Check the Ty Gwyn website for more history and menu details.

If we cannot be kind and decent to other people….look at all that we have…and offer them something, then who are we?”

You can do anything at all if you put your mind to it…This community can achieve anything if it works together”
