“Fiddle Dee Dee….. the political issue***”

the old man in the hat

markgAs the political machines cranks to life, there are important questions that must be addressed. Issues so vital to us that our future well being is at stake. Here on the Tobique one event is at the forefront of my concerns.

Where are the fiddleheads?

Late May and not a green frond in sight! Is the government responsible? They don’t fix the roads. Hospital care is a thing of the past. If government could get everything on line, they would simply abandon the hinterland. Are we now to have only virtual fiddleheads?

You may scoff at my concerns, but this is serious. Global warming? Deforestation? Fracking? Tar sands pipelines? Not fiddlehead friendly!

It’s really kind of amusing. I used to have a four wheel drive vehicle to get from the main highway to the river to fiddlehead. Now I need a 4×4 to get by the potholes to just get the mail!

But seriously, the freezer is empty. I need some new heads, both in the freezer, and in the legislature.

Current political thinking revolves around two financial saviours, wood and oil. Period. That’s all that is in the cookie jar. Cut all the wood (preferably as fast as possible, with as few of people as possible) and exploit local (fracking) and distant (tar sands) petroleum deposits (preferably as fast as possible, with as few of people as possible).

I just don’t get it. Without a doubt, each year, fewer and fewer people produce more and more. This supposed virtuous process has produced the following: decimated environment, massive unemployment, massive debt. The Tories want to do more of the same. Bigger= Better. Maybe, but the evidence is certainly not self- evident. I am pretty sure this is good for those at the top of the food chain, I am not sure for everyone else. I thought trickle- down economics was disproven with the American Regan Era- but maybe the politicos missed that one here in New Brunswick- we are a little off the beaten track.

From what I have heard, so far, I do not see the Liberals offering anything substantially different.

Either the Tories or the Grits have controlled the legislature for the last 79 years. Our net debt is now more than 11 Billion. Mr. Higgs has just announced that the current account will not be in balance until 2018. And the best idea on the block is to cut more trees and burn more oil? Faster.

This is the choice?

Tweedle Dum. Twiddle Dee. Fiddle Dee Dee!

Time to go fiddleheading!

**** fair disclosure- I support a political party that is not coloured blue or red
