The Perth Elks Club hosted a terrific dinner on March 15th. This annual event, which includes a meal and a silent auction, is to raise funds to support the summer camp for the hearing impaired at Magaguadavic Lake.

Each summer during the first full week of August the New Brunswick and PEI Elks and the Royal Purple organize this camp for the Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Deafened Children in the Atlantic Provinces.
This camping adventure offers the participants a week of fun and recreation as they develop friendships, socialize and learn new skills.

The dinner began with a social as attendees perused the tables loaded with items to bid on for the auction.
Businesses and individuals throughout the River Valley had donated all manner of goods for this event. There were tools, kitchen gadgets, baked goods, maple syrup, hand crafted items from local artisans and much more.

The Blackfly Gazette even donated a couple of collections of back issues! Joe McPhail was particularly pleased to have placed the winning bid on a painting of the village by Maj Gagnon. Maj had included a tiny white dog in the painting. Like the famous “Where’s Waldo” pictures, this painting asked the viewer “Where’s Nick?”

The auction alone raised more than $2,000 and a great time was had by all!

Over 80 people enjoyed the steak dinner that was prepared by a crew of volunteer cooks. The young ladies of the Perth Elks Basketball Team from the middle school served the meal to the diners.

In addition to raising funds to support the Magaguadavic Lake Camp Elks Club members provide volunteer assistance at the camp. Last year Elks members Jim and Diane Hathaway worked in the kitchen at the camp all week, helping to serve up tasty meals to hungry campers and staff.
