Don’t you just love checking out the community bulletin boards at our local markets? You can find all kinds of local goods and services offered. During recent visits to my local grocers, I was intrigued by a colourful poster advertising hand loomed bracelets and key chains, complete with photos and a price list….very reasonable prices, too!

The posters were clearly hand made by someone youthful but enterprising, and I called the number listed on the poster to find out more. Hey, a new business in town? We want to tell everyone about it, to celebrate entrepreneurial souls everywhere!

This new enterprise is a joint effort by 9 year old cousins Eve Trites and Abi Bulmer. The girls began making bracelets and chains last September. They use rubber loom bands, and utilize a variety of tools to form the chains and bracelets on the looms, pencils, forks, and so on. Some of their designs are original, created by either one or both of the girls. Some of the more intricate designs can take up to 3 hours to make. During a recent sleep-over, Eve and Abi decided they wanted to sell their jewelry.

They designed their sales posters, and then took photos of some of their bracelets. They printed these off in colour, then pasted them to the poster, then ran off 6 copies of the finished poster to display around the village. Eve’s father Danny took the girls around the village on January 26 to post their advertisement at their chosen locations.

Eve’s mother Cindy explained how important it is to support entrepreneurial ideas at a young age. “We believe in supporting our small business owners in Perth-Andover. We hope that Eve and Abi will continue to be creative and adventurous with their business ideas. We can always use more entrepreneurs in our community, after all small business is the backbone of the North American economy!
