The Victoria County SPCA is thrilled to report that 11 pets left the shelter and found their forever homes during the month of December, 2013! It was a wonderful Christmas present for each of these critters…and the folks who adopted them.

Sybil and Salem, whose stories were recently told in the gazette, were two of the shelter cats who found new homes last month. Sybil’s new home is in Perth-Andover, and Salem, a striking black cat with fabulous orange eyes is now happily enjoying her new forever home in Plaster Rock.

Moe and Goldie are two deserving kitties we are featuring this issue of the gazette. Moe is a one year old neutered male who was dropped off at the shelter as a wee kitten. He’s a little bit shy, but sweet and he gets along well with the other cats.

Goldie is a 9 month old spayed female. She’s a grey tiger with a pretty diamond shaped patch of gold fur on her forehead…hence the name! Like all the other cats, she ended up at the shelter through no fault of her own. She has a lovely personality….just look at that sweet face! And she gets along well with the other cats.

Adoptions, volunteers and donations are vital to keep the shelter running. The shelter volunteers are a dedicated group but they could use some help. If you are able to volunteer even every couple of weeks on a regular basis it would be provide tremendous assistance to the staff.
Someone nearby and dependable who could check on the animals in the event of a storm when would also be very helpful.

Every one of our local organizations that provide services to our communities depend on volunteers to keep running, whether it’s service clubs like the Elks or Legion, coaching programs for youth, or our animal rescue groups.

Money is always useful of course, but in the end the success of any organization all comes down to the helping hands of dedicated volunteers.

It’s been unusually cold this winter, and if it’s too cold for people outside, it’s also too cold for our pets. If you see any case of an animal being left outside without proper shelter for the weather, please call the SPCA Abuse Hotline at 1-877-722-1522.

The animal shelter in Arthurette is currently on winter hours. It is open for adoptions on Saturdays 11 am-3 pm and Sundays 11 am-2 pm or by appointment.
