FIND YOUR MAN! That was the shout that reverberated through the gym as the SV Mini Vikings Basketball team played Grand Falls on December 4th in Perth-Andover.
SV won this game, which put them ahead in their league season with their second win before Christmas. Head Coach Reta Kelley has worked hard to get a good team together, and hopes that this year will be the year her SV Mini Vikings team will bring home a banner!

The game was exciting to watch, with these young boys displaying grace, skill, athleticism and good sportsmanship on the court.

The SV Minor Basketball Association, for grades K-6, was begun by Reta Kelley in 2003. She’d become an avid fan of minor basketball as she watched her nephews play for the Carleton North League in Florenceville.
There was no Minor Basketball Association in Perth-Andover at the time, and she wanted her own sons to have an opportunity to play in the league. So, without any previous coaching experience at all she threw herself into the project, filed the papers and did the legwork and so brought Minor Basketball to Perth-Andover.

This, she says, is why volunteers are so important. Our sports teams at all levels depend on the efforts of volunteers to keep them running smoothly!

Reta began by coaching the girls teams in 2003. In 2007, she began working with the boys teams as well, and now, 11 years later she is a full time league coach.
This year, in fact, she has stepped in to help coach the JV league and so lately has been coaching or attending games 6 nights a week.

She says that volunteer coaches are now needed at all levels. Most people who coach get involved because of their kids, and quit coaching when their children no longer play.

You don’t need coaching experience to become a volunteer coach…. you just need to be able to handle kids! And, there is plenty of support to help you learn the ropes if you decide to become a volunteer coach. It’s fun, rewarding and vital to keeping these programs alive.
