Natural and Unpasteurized Honey from Hollins Apiary

Raw Honey from Hollins Apiary
Raw Honey from Hollins Apiary
Blake Hollins, a local bee keeper in Arthurette, produces and sells all natural, raw unpasteurized honey.
He started keeping bees about nine years ago, and now has 19 strong colonies producing honey.

Raw honey is anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-carcinogenic. It offers up a whole host of health benefits that are completely erased from processed, commercial honey products.

Raw honey is also anti-microbial, and was used in ancient times as a wound dressing. There is current research being done to explore this use again…. physicians have discovered that wounds dressed with raw honey heal quickly and cleanly, and that raw honey also helps necrotic tissue to slough off.

Raw honey is amazing stuff! Honey over 2,000 years old has been discovered in Egyptian tombs that was still good to eat.

Honey has long been used to help ease a sore throat and quell coughs. You can just mix it up with some hot water and lemon juice, or make a fancier recipe to include more cough suppressing ingredients .

Here is a simple recipe for an easy to make and All-Natural Cough Syrup:
INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 cup of raw honey
  • The juice of 1 lemon
  • ¼ – ½ tsp of cayenne pepper (adjust to taste)

Optional Ingredients (might not go over so well with kids, but can make the syrup more effective)

  • 1 tsp of freshly grated ginger
  • 1 clove of freshly grated garlic
  • 1 Tbls apple cider vinegar

Place the honey and lemon juice in a saucepan and heat on low for about 10 minutes. Make sure not to bring to a boil, as it will diminish the medicinal properties. Stir in the ginger, pepper and garlic till well combined and heated through. Stir in the apple cider vinegar last and remove from heat. Store in a jar in the refrigerator. Will keep for up to two weeks, but is more effective if made fresh every few days.

Blake is one of several local bee keepers that supply raw honey in the St John River Valley. He also plans to sell nucleus bee colonies next year if you have a hankering to explore the fascinating world of bee keeping yourself!
