The Muniac Convenience Store

Last week I stopped in at the little convenience store in Muniac for the very first time. I’ve driven past many times, but was never in need of convenience store goodies during those trips so I just kept on driving.
But I was always curious about the store, and I admire the spirit of anyone who runs a business in rural New Brunswick….it’s not like you have customers falling out of the trees around here!

The store has a vintage charm, with the kind of porch that in a bygone era old fellers would sit on to play checkers, chew the fat and watch life go by.
Inside, I met the current managers of the store, Leila Forget and her son Jason Deanes. They have been operating the business for a little over a year now. It has been owned by members of their family for over 35 years.
The building was originally located down by Muniac Stream, but was moved to higher ground some 40 years ago to avoid flooding.
Leila and Jason live on the premises which certainly saves on gas and commute time!
I stopped in the week before the big Biker Bash at Muniac Park. I figured that the little store must get mobbed during Biker Bash Weekend but Leila and Jason told me that nowadays there are so many vendors at the bash people don’t really need to leave the campground.
In past years, however, the store would stay open until the wee hours of the morning of the Biker Bash if the customers were still coming in.

Although small, the store has a good variety of items. They offer movies for sale and to rent and there are a variety of collectibles and vintage items for sale.
Local folks stop in every day for coffee and a snack and to catch up on the latest with Leila and Jason.
The refrigerators are all vintage, with one cooler still sporting the original built-in bottle cap opener for soda pop. Remember the good old days when pop was till made with actual sugar instead of corn syrup so it tasted good and it came in a glass bottle you had to pop the top off of with an actual bottle opener?
My childhood was mostly financed by collecting and returning those bottles for the deposit!

The store also has one gas pump serving up regular gas.
Stop in to say howdy to Leila and Jason the next time you drive by!
