Hoyt’s Flowers & Gifts is one of the oldest operating retail businesses in Perth-Andover. This lovely little shop was begun on the front porch of the home of entrepreneur & housewife Ethel Hoyt back in 1959.
Ethel ran the floral business out of her home for several years and then built a small freestanding building next door to house the shop.
After Ethel retired, Hoyt’s was then taken over by her daughter Carol Clark for several years.
There have been several other owners over the years since then, and the business is now back in the Hoyt family.
Beverly Hoyt and her mother Bonnie Goodine now operate this flower & gift shop.
They’ve moved the business back into a spacious and attractive shop attached to Bonnie’s home, which is smack dab between the original shop at Ethel’s home and the freestanding store which currently houses one of our little local dollar stores.
Beverly and Bonnie offer much more than just flowers!

Flowers and plants have always held special symbolic meanings to people. Especially in the Victorian Era, when it was very difficult, if not impossible, to actually say what you wanted to to the object of your affection or someone you admired ( ahem, not that folks find that any easier today!)
A number of books explaining the exact meaning of various flowers were published in the late 19th century to guide people on “how to say it with flowers” and not goof up.
Even if it was to tell someone you weren’t interested…there’s a flower for every emotion and purpose!
I thought it would be fun to include a little chart on flower meanings until I realized that there were so many flowers I’d need a whole book to print it for you.
So I satisfied myself with including a chart describing what rose colors signify. But it’s fun and informative to look up flower meanings if you have a special secret message you’d like to say with flowers.

Bev offers up some tips to help prolong the life and beauty of your fresh flowers!

  • Make sure your vase is clean and sanitized
  • Fill your vase with fresh, room temperature water
  • Add flower food provided by your florist or a pinch of sugar to the water
  • Every few days remove your flowers and cut about an inch off the end on an angle off the stem (this will expose more area to drink water)
  • Keep your flowers out of direct sunlight
